Goodbye 2008.

Image
2008 brought much growth and humilty into my life... To sum up. It was an eye opening year. Without question. I celebrate and honor it. A year where I learned so much, where I discovered new ways of being, where I remembered the truth more often than the lies. A year where I practiced loving everyone. No matter how trying or troubling or whatever 2008 was... everyone I know experienced something miraculous, something amazing and something loving. That's what I'll take with me. Sayonara 2008!

There's no way to look at the radiant sun casting its glow in the brilliant leaves of the trees that guard the bottom of my road. It heartens my spirit to witness the magic of nature and it boggles my mind that technology allows me to capture it.

Peace. Joy. Love. Music.

Wishing you the happiest of holiday seasons! I happen to love Bill Moyers, and during the year, I don't get the chance to watch his program on PBS as often as I would like. as luck would have it, enjoying a conversation at a friends house the other day, they played me a recent Moyers show featuring Mark Johnson and his documenatary -- "Playing for Change. Peace through Music." (I found the segment very moving. -- it runs about 20 minutes.) and. thought I would share as my Christmas communication.... in case you felt like catching an inspiring wave of connectedness as we ride out 2008 and head into the new year... http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/10242008/watch3.html theologian James Dunn spoke of -- the humility that befits all humanity the hurt that afflicts every heart and the hope that comes with community an old theme in American history. there is strength in the company of others from "we the people" to "we shall overcome." to quote Bill Moyers ...

Sometimes you just have to say....

Joni Mitchell rocks! poetry in motion... lyrics to Both Sides Now -- Bows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air And feather canyons everywhere, i've looked at clouds that way. But now they only block the sun, they rain and snow on everyone. So many things i would have done but clouds got in my way. I've looked at clouds from both sides now, From up and down, and still somehow It's cloud illusions i recall. I really don't know clouds at all. Moons and junes and ferris wheels, the dizzy dancing way you feel As every fairy tale comes real; i've looked at love that way. But now it's just another show. you leave 'em laughing when you go And if you care, don't let them know, no don't give yourself away. I've looked at love from both sides now, From give and take, and still somehow It's love's illusions i recall. I really don't know love at all. Tears and fears and feeling proud to say "i love you" right out loud...

Eleanor Roosevelt on Meet The Press 1957

"We're living in a time where everything is changing... where there's no use in belittling your rival or putting your head in the sand and saying 'I don't want to know.' It's much better to know." In Eleanor Roosevelt's book You Learn By Living (1960) she tackles the subject of hope and effort and belief and the power of faith. "Surely, in the light of history, it is more intelligent to hope rather than to fear, to try rather than not to try. For one thing we know beyond all doubt: Nothing has ever been achieved by the person who says, `It can't be done.'" Eleanor Roosevelt is widely regarded as one of the finest ambassadors the USA has ever put forth. Her words and wisdom resonate to this day.

"Angels of Our Better Nature."

There's been a lot of talk about Abraham Lincoln and his presidency circuluating. In the air. The reasons are obvious. He was statesman. He was a leader standing on the cusp of an uncertain future. He presided after a war that pitted brother against brother. He attempted to tide the rift of a long fought battle and seemingly insurmountable differences of opinion. He delivered the United States into a new era. On this election day. I post the last paragraph of Abraham Lincoln's first inaugural address, delivered March 4, 1861... "We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battle-field, and patriot grave, to every living heart and hearthstone, all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature." Lincoln's First Inaugural Address (Top T...

Poet's Walk!

:Central Park's - Poet's Walk: Enjoy! WHAT TO REMEMBER WHEN WAKING In that first hardly noticed moment to which you wake, coming back to this life from the other more secret, moveable and frighteningly honest world where everything began, there is a small opening into the new day which closes the moment you begin your plans. What you can plan is too small for you to live. What you can live wholeheartedly will make plans enough for the vitality hidden in your sleep. To be human is to become visible while carrying what is hidden as a gift to others. To remember the other world in this world is to live in your true inheritance. You are not a troubled guest on this earth, you are not an accident amidst other accidents you were invited from another and greater night than the one from which you have just emerged. Now, looking through the slanting light of the morning window toward the mountain presence of everything that can be, what urgency calls you to your one love? What shape wa...

Oh, The Places You'll Go!

Congratulations! Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away! You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go. You'll look up and down streets. Look 'em over with care. About some you will say, "I don't choose to go there." With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet, you're too smart to go down any not-so-good street. And you may not find any you'll want to go down. In that case, of course, you'll head straight out of town. It's opener there in the wide open air. Out there things can happen and frequently do to people as brainy and footsy as you. And when things start to happen, don't worry. Don't stew. Just go right along. You'll start happening too. OH! THE PLACES YOU'LL GO! You'll be on your way up! You'll be seeing gr...

You Can Have Whatever You Allow to Be.

"Do not go gentle into that goodnight" was written by a son to his dying father, to convince him to fight against imminent death. I take a tiny liberty with Dylan Thomas' words. Don't go blindly into that good night. Do not go disconnected into that good night. Don't think you are shut off. Don't think you can do nothing. Don't think that's the way it is. Don't think. Get down with being. Human. I reprint the entire poem written by Dylan Thomas. Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night. Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go...

Unity is Looking For a Leader.

Image
Be that leader. We are witnessing a great struggle. A struggle in differences. A struggle in divergence. A struggle that is externalizing all of our inner struggles. A struggle over whether we will be loving or whether we will be fearful. A struggle over whether we will know peace or suffer needlessly. I'm opting out of the struggle. I always go back to paraphrasing a country song "all the reason's I'm here, I know by heart." You can live in the fiction of the struggle. Or you can revel in the truth. The truth exactly as it is. No fooling. No despair. No hope. Just a knowing that everything is what it is. "safety lies in truth and not in lies." "we create what we defend against." "we're going to get there. one way of the other. It's just whether we are we going to get there through pain or through joy." Let's get there compassionately. It's time to let go of the wants. and. stay in the truth of what's needed. it...

Confucius Says...

Image
A disciple asked Confucius about government. Confucius said. “See to it that there is enough food, enough arms, and the trust of people in the government.” The disciple asked. “if one of the remaining two unavoidably had to be omitted, which of the three would be first?” Confucius said “omit arms.” The disciple asked “if one of the remaining two unavoidably had to be omitted, which would be first?” Confucius said “omit food. Since ancient times people have died, but nothing can be established without the trust of the people.” (12:7) Enough said. "The knowing are not confused; the humane are not worried; the brave are not afraid." Confucius (9:30) Confucius' philosophy deals with "personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice and sincerity." "Cultivated people reach upward; petty people reach downward." (14:24)

Obama's woes have nothing to do with 'lipstick' - Decision '08- msnbc.com The hysteria is palpable. The rush to fearful and divisive thinking is understandable, but not acceptable. Democrats have not known who they are or how to govern. The party does not have the commitment to its own ideals. At the end of the day billions of dollars will have been spent, piles of animosity will have been stirred, and deep wounds will have been peppered with salty festering nastiness, all in the hopes of "electing" a leader. I hold in my heart that the solutions to all our opportunities are within reach. And it is most certainly a much more pleasant space than the illusion that we are currently battling over. Hillary Rodham Clinton offers tremendous insight into the uniquely American creation. A powerhouse woman in all her blazing glory. She kicks ass. Takes numbers. And. It was already late enough, and a wild night, and the road full of fallen branches and stones. But little by little, as you left their voices behind, the stars began to burn through the sheets of clouds, and there was a new voice which you slowly recognized as your own, that kept you company as you strode deeper and deeper into the world, determined to do the only thing you could do-- determined to save the only life you could save.

I'm going to consider the possibility that there is another way. I won't talk about war, I will feel peace. I won't talk about what isn't working. I will experience what is. I won't complain about what people don't do. I will appreciate what they do. Cura Et Labore Latin motto "with care and work" I'm going to allow myself to be uplifted. and. be willing to see change. In a new light. In what's remembered.

"People's eyes glaze over when I mention my Masters in the Eastern Classics. So I don't bring it up." I almost couldn't believe I heard it. This person sitting across from me spent countless hours reading, absorbing, and studying.and he chucked it under the bus at the slightest smell of a yawn. As I see it we have two problems. Those who have the information and are mocked for it and have to experience the "glaze over" when sharing their information. AND. those that care less about knowing information than knowing where to find information. Concepts and ideas have to be explored to be understood. To be known. Contribution + Appreciation = Fulfillment If you know something share it. Wholeheartedly.

From the brilliant Sunday in the Park with George -- Stop worrying where you're going- Move on If you can know where you're going You've gone Just keep moving on I chose, and my world was shaken- So what? The choice may have been mistaken, The choosing was not You have to move on Look at what you want, Not at where you are, Not at what you'll be- Look at all the things you've done for me Opened up my eyes, Taught me how to see, Notice every tree- Here's Bernadette Peters singing one of her Stephen Sondheim show soul stopper. :Bernadette Peters sings Move On from Sunday In The Park With George:

Avoid LLD At All Costs.

Low Level Drama is like a termite eroding the foundation of all we hold dear. Creeping in quietly and without warning. Dragging us into its corrosive energy. It can start innocuously with a question "how was the trip to visit his parents?" and spiral dangerously to "I want to stab my mother-in-law in the eye." You don't have to answer why we fall victim. But fall victim we do. I used to think it was the simple principle of gravity. the constant pull downward of our thoughts. But the more I keep my radar attune to blip an early warning sound at the onset of an LLD storm. The more I'm able to stay in love, kindness and compassion. Rising above. Living beyond the storm. And all the happier for it.

Fish-ey

Tinkle, tinkle, little fish. This has to be world's most atrocious aquarium — a Chinese restaurant has been criticized for keeping ornamental fish in a urinal. The restaurant in Changchun city has around 20 fancy carp in the 13-foot long trough in the men' bathroom. The Eastern Asian Economic and Trade Daily says experts have condemned the move as harmful to the fish and "disrespectful to China's fish culture". :Just In Time - Michael Buble & Tony Bennett:

Don't cry for me America. I'll be crying on and off for years to come. :Hilary Clinton delivers her conscession speech in New York: I liked what HRC had to say in her concession speech to BO... "life is too short, time is too precious and the stakes are too high." God bless us. everyone.

More Than You Know.

It used to make me laugh that I have the Pope's email. I saw it as a sure sign the Vatican was jumping wholeheartedly into the digital age. Part of an effort to get current and be in touch. Too bad. It's thinking couldn't come along for the ride. Pope thanks virgins for 'gift' to Christ - The Vatican- msnbc.com The pope said the women's vocation was deeply meaningful, even if it could be seen as "dark and useless" by some of those who do not share the Catholic faith. It is estimated there are more than 3,000 consecrated Catholic virgins worldwide. "Man of my heart I love you so".... takes on new meaning. :More Than You Know | Jane Monheit:
