A Man of Myth and Mystery.

Image
There is a story that Joseph Campbell tells of "a young boy that finds a most beautiful bird in the forest and brings it back to show his Father. The Father doesn’t want to feed the bird, so the Father kills the bird and with it kills the song and in doing so kills himself.  It is the metaphor of how we kill our own nature.”   Patrick Takaya Solomon’s Finding Joe shares one man's take on his experience of Joseph Campbell's work.  Mr. Solomon chose not to include much about the man who is the subject of this doc in his film, and after screening it left me wanting to dive deeply into who Joseph Campbell is and why he chose to spend his life decoding the one story, or as Campbell put it the one song of the universe. Awareness begins when we recognize the eternal truth through all the stories we see, hear and are told.  Dragons, in whatever form, are meant to be faced and trained, people are meant to go through rights of passage to ever deepening wisdom, ...

Strength. Love. Peace.

A Tough Mind and a Tender Heart (Chapter 1) from Martin Luther King Jr.'s book The Strength to Love opens with Matthew 10:16   Be Ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves and goes on to talk about "life at it's best is a creative synthesis of opposites in fruitful harmony.  The philosopher Hegel said that truth is found neither in the thesis or the antithesis, but in an emergent synthesis which reconciles the two." This emergent synthesis which reconciles two opposite forces is the voice of life in peace and harmony with the constant change agent that is eternally propelling destinies cycles. In every way it is AND not or.  We are at a time in history where each of us must learn this mechanism of change of recognizing the truth within the appearance of separation and unreconcilable options.  We get to revel in the strength and power of our soul's function in each moment of being present, fully alive with a musculature of practice creating the strengt...

Wake Up!

A power has been unleashed, a power to move mountains, the power of Love. TURN IT UP The deepest form of Community is to join with a brother in a purpose higher than your own. Let today be a reminder there is much to be done and bust out the Love, open your heart and turn up the volume to an eleven.   Today is a day to have faith in your dreams. BE INSPIRED. BE LOVING. BE YOU.  REPEAT. Where we got it wrong. We're going to make a correction. And get it right. Humanity, equality and peace are our birthright. It is time to remember the truth. Onward...

Survive and Thrive

"Everyone who hears a story of survival becomes a witness."  Very stirring words spoken by a Holocaust Survivor lecturing on the last Sunday of 2012 at the Museum of Tolerance  as I sat with my Friend in shock and complete disbelief at the sheer level of survival and more survival and yet more surviving that this man was sharing.  The level of hatred and horror he experienced as a young man was beyond belief, even after all of the accounts that have been memorialized in films and books, it was hard to hear.   In listening to each word, I was reminded that injustice to one of us is injustice to all of us.  That good men and women must never stand quietly by when humanity in any form is threatened. The story of Hitler and the Third Reich is a human story of hate.  It is not isolated to this era and point of history.  It takes place in hearts and places and spaces around the globe every day.  Injustice and in human treatment is perpetuated ...

I don't know why I have never written anything about Noel Coward .  In so many ways he has been an elegant inspiration to what I love so dearly, the joy of words put together in uniquely fantastic ways to bring insight and truth to so many. He wrote If Love Were All for his operetta in three acts Bitter Sweet .  As always the story unfolds through the words chosen and put together speaking heart felt volumes.. I believe in doing what I can In crying when I must In laughing when I choose Hey ho, if love were all I should be lonely. I believe the more you love a man, The more you give your trust, The more you're bound to lose. Although when shadows fall I think if only Somebody splendid really needed me Someone affectionate and dear Cares would be ended if I knew that he Wanted to have me near. But I believe that since my life began The most I've had is just a talent to amuse. Hey ho, if love were all Words and music are a beautiful reminder t...

The Human Drama

Image
It is a time of great inspiration and unbridled remembrance that we are all in this together. Poet Edwin Markham wrote -      ''There is a destiny that makes us brothers;     None goes his way alone:     All that we send into the lives of others     Comes back into our own.''   Over the holiday my buddy Greg Talmage shared with me an interview that Arthur Miller did toward the end of his life with Charlie Rose quoting to me Miller's statement that "Great writers understand the relationship with justice."  Arthur Miller was one of the greats and a man who understood the eternal heartbeat of the human soul.  Enjoy the interview below. Lots of Love, Melanie Miller on talent and the theater... "What the big ones have in common is a fierce moral sensibility which is unquenchable and that they are all burning with some anger at the way the world is, the little ones have made peace with it and the bigger ones ha...
